28/11/2006 : D'Angelo au même titre qu'Otis Redding dans les années 60, révolutionne la soul et le R&B américain grâce à son charisme, sa poésie et son indescriptible voix de miel. Né à Richmond en Virginie, fils et petit-fils de pasteur, D'Angelo fît preuve dès sa plus tendre enfance, de talents musicaux extraordinaires, chantant et jouant du piano dès l'âge de cinq ans. A dix-huit ans, D'Angelo joue dans un groupe de rap baptisé IDU. Après avoir envoyé des démos à quelques responsables de l'industrie du disque, D'Angelo se fait remarquer chez EMI où il signe un contrat en 91. En 94, il co-signe et co-produit U Will Know, le single de la bande son de Jason's Lyric. Le bouche à oreilles jouant en sa faveur, son premier album solo Brown Sugar sort en 95 et remporte un énorme succès. Cet opus s'impose alors comme un modèle du R&B et de la soul version masculine. Brown sugar est vendu à plus de deux millions d'exemplaires et fait de D'Angelo une star. Une pression énorme sur les épaules, il a donc pris son temps pour réaliser son deuxième opus, après la naissance d'un fils. Voodoo est sorti en janvier 2000, scotchant la critique et le public. Il s'est entouré des plus grands : Lauryn Hill, Method Man, Redman ou Charlie Hunter, la guitare de The Roots. Marcus MILLER déclara un jour à un journaliste : « Je n'aime pas tenir le compte de ce que j'ai fait. Je n'ai pas envie de passer pour le super touche-à-tout de la musique. »
