Saxquest Saxophone Museum
08/07/2008 : The Saxquest Saxophone Museum showcases a huge collection of many of the finest and rarest saxophones in the world as well as a collection of vintage saxophone accessories and other historic saxophone memorabilia. The museum is located on the 2nd floor of the Saxquest shop and is free and open to the public.Included in the museum's collection is a fully restored quartet of original pre-civil war Adolphe Sax saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone). Adolphe Sax invented the saxophone in 1846 and very few of his original instruments still exist. Also featured is a Conn-O-Sax, made by the C.G. Conn company in 1928. This wonderful and fascinating instrument was the brainchild of their ill-conceived idea of replacing the orchestra's English horn with a saxophone. Other highlights from the collection include a quintet of 1920's vintage gold plate artist model Conn saxophones (alto, c-melody, tenor, bari, bass) with exquisite hand cut engraving, a 1950's vintage arcrylic Grafton saxophone (made famous by Charlie Parker at Massey Hall in New York), a Selmer Paris saxophone commemorating their 1904 St. Louis World's Fair gold medal for clarinet design, and many other rare and one-of-a-kind saxes. From the huge bass saxophone to the obscenely small sopranisimo saxophone, the Saxquest Saxophone Museum is a real St. Louis treasure for the music lover or the eclectic museum goer. Chris Caldwell - Soft Machine for saxophones
11/05/2008 : Excerpts from one of London's Royal Academy of Music's "Free on Fridays" concert series. This particular project was led by Chris Caldwell, baritone saxophonist in the Delta Saxophone Quartet, performing alongside students of the Academy. The pieces performed are taken from the classic Soft Machine repertoire : "Floating World" (Karl Jenkins, arr. Adrian Revell), "Moon In June" (Robert Wyatt, arr. Gareth Brady) and "Box 25/4 Lid" (Mike Ratledge & Hugh Hopper), the latter re-arranged by Yumi Hara Cawkwell under the title "Wrapped Box 25/4 Lid (with Ribbons)". The seven students are Joshua Arcoleo, George Crowley, Thomas Laurence, Thomas Leaper, Richard Shepherd, Dafydd Williams and Joseph Wright.

The classic Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond's liquid alto saxophone lasted for 17 years, during which time they produced the first ever million-selling jazz tune (Take Five), toured the world many times, and introduced enormous numbers of people to the jazz sound. The two other members of the quartet were Eugene Wright on bass and Joe Morello on drums.

Ben Harper-Sexual healing (live rtl)
15/11/2006 : Né le 28 octobre 1969, Benjamin Harper a grandi dans la région du désert Mohave en Californie (à 75 kilomètres à l'est de Los Angeles). Elevé entre désert et ghettos dans un univers multiracial - il a du sang indien, africain et européen - il s'est trouvé une route, unique et dépouillée, au carrefour du blues et de la musique folk. Cette route part de Claremont, en Californie. Il se passionne très vite pour la musique, spécialement la guitare acoustique et ses dérivées (dobro, Weissenborn). Successivement facteur, réparateur de guitares (comme son grand-père) et musicien autodidacte, Harper n'a pas l'attitude recluse d'un jeune artiste incompris : au contraire, il a passé la plus grande partie de son adolescence sur sa planche de skate dans la rue avec ses amis. Sa musique ne supporte pas une description simple, car son impact est indéniable sans différence de race ou d'éthnie. Harper séduit aussi bien les skaters punks que les jeunes fans de Hip-Hop qui ont grandi en écoutant Bob Marley et Jimi Hendrix. Ses plus grosses ventes se font actuellement en Europe où ses disques frôlent partout le disque d'or. Après avoir signé un contrat avec Virgin Records en 1993, il sort son premier album auto-produit, "Welcome To The Cruel World" en février 1994. Les critiques s'emballent. Jugeant l'artiste "jeune et doué", Rolling Stone le félicite pour cet "éclatant premier album". Billboard, pour sa part, fait remarquer que "certaines chansons ont la marque des classiques, ces mélodies qui restent dans la tête longtemps après les avoir écoutés. Un premier album digne d'éloges." Suivant la sortie de cet album, Harper part en tournée à travers les Etats-Unis et l'Europe, tantôt en première partie, tantôt comme artiste principal. Jouant assis, en slide, sur sa guitare acoustique, Ben Harper et son groupe The Innocent Criminals, offrent un show sans équivalent et à contre-courant. Les débuts flamboyants de son premier album "Welcome To The Cruel World" en 1994 lui permettent donc de partager l'affiche avec des artistes tels que : Spearhead, Luscious Jackson, PJ Harvey, The Fugees, Guru (de Gangstarr), Neneh Cherry et MC Solaar, ainsi que de jouer avec les plus grands : John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles et Gil Scott-Heron. Le second album, "Fight For Your Mind", permet à Ben Harper de prendre une autre direction musicale en tant que chanteur, compositeur et producteur. "La musique ne cesse de grandir, " affirme-t-il, "elle est en constante évolution et j'essaie justement de la suivre." En tant que musicien, son utilisation parcimonieuse de l'amplification éléctronique lui permet de se consacrer d'avantage à la recherche de nouveaux sons acoustiques. "Ground On Down", le premier extrait de "Fight For Your Mind" met en évidence ce changement d'orientation : sa voix adopte une texture nouvelle, délivrant un chant inspiré venu d'ailleurs... Ce titre sert d'introduction puissante à un album mélangeant les genres, de l'hypnotique au sensuel "Please Me Like You Want To", du soul "Gold To Me" à la beauté désanchantée d' "Another Lonely Day". Les éléments clés de "Welcome To The Cruel World" se retrouvent sur "Fight For Your Mind" : "Oppression", "Give A Man A Home", "Burn One Down" et "Fight For Your Mind" illustrent bien l'expression sincère par Ben Harper de ses convictions. Les innovations musicales se constatent sur des morceaux comme "Excuse Me Mr." et sa voix "téléphonique", la première utilisation du quartet à cordes sur "Power Of The Gospel" et les solos "hendrixiesques" sur "God Fearing Man". En 1997, suivant presque 4 années de tournées incessantes, Ben Harper sort son troisième album "The Will To Live". Point de nouvelle orientation musicale cette fois-ci, mais l'apparition de la guitare électrique sur des morceaux comme "Faded" et "Glory & Consequence" et celle de saxophone sur "Mama's Tripin'" et "Ashes". Le quatuor à cordes restent présent sur un titre, le kravitzien "Roses From My Friend" étant peut-être le seul point faible de l'album. Une nouvelle tournée (!) a suivi la sortie de ce CD, emmenant Ben et les Innocent Criminals d'abord en Europe - notamment au premier Festival "Rock à Paris" au Parc des Princes devant 50'000 personnes, mais aussi dans de petites salles comme le New Morning -, puis aux USA où il joue presque chaque soir dans des salles à taille humaine. Ainsi, un nouvel album Live: "Live From Mars" est sorti a la suite de sa tournée. Il reprend des titres chantés en live sur les scenes mondiales.
